How to Add Light to a Windowless Room

How to Add Light to a Windowless Room

In our dream world, we are all living in homes with large windows that let in plenty of natural light. In the real world though, this may not be the case. We may often need to trade in big spaces to make room for a convenient location or a floor plan that works better for us. However, just because we have to compromise on the type of space we have doesn’t mean we can’t think of ways to liven up our homes.

If you find yourself mostly spending time indoors in a room with small windows, or limited natural light, there are a few things you can do to brighten it up.

Add Unique Lamps

One of our favorite things about lamps is that they serve a utilitarian and aesthetic purpose. Modern lampshades available in different styles and shapes are versatile enough to match most interior design styles and unique enough for you to make it your own. Adding different lampshades around your home will light up corners and create a beautiful ambiance that you can relax in. If you live in a smaller space, consider adding lampshades made of lighter materials such as paper lampshades or linen lamp shades.

These will help brighten your room not only by emanating a soft glow, but these materials will also create an element of flow and lightness. Natural fabrics such as paper and linen also add textures to your space making it visually appealing and relaxing at the same time.

Use Lighter Color Furniture

Yes, Pantone may have declared the blue-violet Very Peri as the color of the year, but that doesn’t mean bringing in a big couch in that color! If you really like a color, consider introducing it in bits and pieces around your home.

For your larger pieces though, it’s best to keep the colors neutral. A dark room is likely to seem darker if it is occupied by dark colors. If you are worried that white may look too stark, consider lighter wood colors or pastels. When you invest in light color furniture, remember to check if the pieces are easy to clean.

Introducing lighter colors in your furniture will also allow you to add more personality in your home with brighter home accents.

Bring in Some Plants

We are all plant parents now, aren’t we? A few potted plants do wonders to lighten up any space, but a windowless room can be completely transformed by them.

Before you decide to bring them in however, be sure to learn which plants like darker spaces. The last thing you need is a high-maintenance plant that loves sunlight! Snake plants are some of the hardiest plants that do just fine in darker spaces. Their long graceful leaves also add a touch of modernity. If you want a flowering plant, consider the beautiful Peace Lily. This plant can grow quickly with little care and also does fine in low light conditions if you take care of it.

Add Mirrors

If you were looking for an excuse to buy the beautiful mirror you’ve been eyeing for a while, then this is it!

Mirrors will help bounce light back into your room so place it directly opposite a small window if you have one. Else, consider placing it near a lamp so the light can reflect off that. In addition to this, mirrors also help your room appear larger.

Gold-rimmed mirrors, or mirrors with wood-carved frames can be statement pieces unto themselves, so consider creating an accent wall with a few of them placed at a distance. Mix it up with pieces of art to create a visual break and add interest to your walls.

Don’t let a dark room dampen your mood. Use these tips to add a sense of lightness and personality to your space.
