Just Starting Out on Your Musical Journey? Try These Beginner-Friendly Instruments

Walls covered in posters of your favorite musicians, head-banging late into the night only to have an adult admonish you, holding a baseball bat and pretending to play the guitar, forming deep friendships with people after realizing that they like the same kind of music as you — at one point or another, we have all dreamed of being musicians.

Don’t let that dream die just because you may have grown up and adult responsibilities have come calling. You have a responsibility to live your dream too! If you still harbor hopes of playing a musical instrument, but aren’t sure where to begin, this article is for you. We have a list of some of the easiest musical instruments that will have you strumming, drumming, and humming!

Stringed Instruments

While you may have dreamed of playing the guitar just like Jimmi Hendrix, we recommend starting off with something smaller and more manageable. Try getting a banjolele. Much smaller in size than a guitar, banjoleles are a combination of a banjo and ukulele.

You can strum these beautiful-sounding instruments with your fingers or a pick. Their small size also makes them great to carry along with you on day trips or longer vacations. If you are looking for banjolele, consider some that are weather-resistant. Even though you may not be a professional musician yet, you will surely not want your precious instrument to be damaged by the elements.

Woodwind Instruments

Close your eyes and imagine all those beautiful jazz music posters you may have seen. One of the most well-known jazz instruments, the saxophone may seem intimidating but is one of the easiest instruments to learn. Don’t let its majestic build worry you. One of the best things about playing a saxophone is its versatility. The instrument produces different kinds of sounds, which can all sit well in different ensembles.

The most important thing you need in order to be a master at the saxophone is practice, but if you are content simply making music with no ambition to play at concerts, the saxophone is a good bet. Its fingering system is not as complicated as other woodwind instruments too.

Percussions

If there is one instrument that competes with the guitar in terms of popularity, it has to be a drum set. If you have often dreamed of being a drummer, then this is the time to start.

While it may take a long time for you to understand the ins and outs of this instrument, you can quickly learn how to play some of your favorite tunes on it. This may be an expensive investment in a blossoming music interest, but your base kit can last for a long time.

Free Reed Wind Instrument

You may immediately think of Bob Dylan when you think of the harmonica, but this relatively easy-to-learn instrument is also popular with school children. The most important thing you want to pay attention to while learning the harmonica is to control your breath.

This instrument has its fans and haters, who either like or dislike its very particular sound, however, this versatile instrument has found a place in different genres of music. The reason many people turn to the harmonica is that the basic principles of this instrument are easy to learn, but as with almost everything else, perfection comes with practice.

To be a master of any instrument takes a lot of time and practice, but don’t let that discourage you. This list of easy-to-learn musical instruments will have you swaying to your own music in no time.
